28 Influential African Americans: Lena Waithe

Black History Month is finally here!!!! Each day this month we will be honoring African Americans who uplift our culture and exemplifies BLACK EXCELLENCE.

Lena Waithe is an African American screenwriter, producer, and actress. She is best known for co-writing and acting in the Netflix comedy-drama series Master of None. Waithe made history becoming the first African-American woman to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series in 2017 for her work on Master of None. She is also the creator of Showtime drama series The Chi and most recently she has teamed up with actress Halle Berry to produce a 10-episode series of the 1992 comedy “Boomerang” airing on BET Networks. The series is set to air this year.

Waithe uses her influence to support the African American community in the entertainment industry through her role as co-chair of the Committee of Black Writers at the Writers Guild. She is also a voice for the LGBTQ community and is very open and honest about her experiences. Lena is all about uplifting her community and creating opportunities for people of color.
