Black History Month is finally here!!!! Each day this month we will be honoring African Americans who uplifts our culture and exemplifies BLACK EXCELLENCE.
Colin Kaepernick is an activist and a former American football quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. He last played in 2016. During the 49ers' third preseason game in 2016, Kaepernick began to sit during the playing of the U.S. national anthem rather than stand as usual. Kaepernick sat as a protest against racial injustice and systematic oppression in the United States. The following week, and throughout the regular season, Kaepernick began kneeling during the anthem instead. His actions resulted in a wider protest movement, which intensified in September 2017 after current president Donald Trump suggested that NFL owners should fire players who protest the national anthem.
Following the season, Kaepernick became a free agent and went unsigned in the off season. In November 2017, Kaepernick filed a grievance against the NFL and its owners, accusing them of working together to keep him out of the league. In 2016, Kaepernick founded the "Know Your Rights Camp", a free campaign for youth to raise awareness on higher education, self empowerment, and instruction to properly interact with law enforcement in various scenarios.
Kaepernick pledged to donate one million dollars to organizations working in oppressed communities. In 2018, Kaepernick announced that he would make the final $100,000 donation of his "Million Dollar Pledge" in the form of $10,000 donations to charities that would be matched by celebrities.
We commend Colin Kaepernick for putting his career on the line to speak up on major issues in this country. He constantly uses his platform to shed light on the injustices in the black community. Colin, you are appreciated! We love you !!
