28 Influential African Americans: Yara Shahidi
Black History Month is finally here!!!! Each day this month we will be honoring African Americans who uplifts our culture and exemplifies BLACK EXCELLENCE.
Yara Shahidi is an African american and Iranian actress , feminist, and activist. Yara is best known from her role as Zoey Johnson in the ABC sitcom Black-ish and its spin off series Grown-ish. She is also a student at Harvard University studying sociology and African American studies.
Yara founded Eighteen x 18 with social news publisher NowThis, which is a creative platform to engage with the younger generation on speaking their truth, getting active and vote! It is also designed to uplift that generation of voters to take action into their own hands and discover the issues that impact them through their own stories and experiences. Her other organizations include Yara’s Club a partnership with Young Women's Leadership Network (YWLN) of New York, which provides online mentorship in hopes to end poverty through education. Shahidi’s activism has led her to many accomplishments. She has been noticed by former first lady Michelle Obama, who wrote her a letter of recommendation to Harvard University. She was also given the opportunity by Teen Vogue to interview Hillary Clinton in 2017.
It is hard to believe that Yara Shahidi is only 18 years old. She is such an amazing teen and is always willing to use her platform to speak on important issues. She is the definition of working hard work to achieve what you want in life. Doing all the work she does as well as attending Harvard University is admirable. We appreciate all that you do Yara. Keep up the amazing work !!!
