Black History Month is finally here!!!! Each day this month we will be honoring African Americans who uplifts our culture and exemplifies BLACK EXCELLENCE.
Marsai Martin is a 14 year old African American actress, singer, and producer. She is known for her role as Diane Johnson in the ABC comedy series Black-ish. She is set to star and executive produce the 2019 Universal Pictures comedy film Little.
Marsai was only 5 years old when she landed her first national commercial. In 2013, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue her acting career. The following year, she was casted in the ABC comedy series Black-ish created by Kenya Barris. Working along pioneers in field such as Laurence Fishburne, Jenifer Lewis , Tracee Ellis Ross and Anthony Anderson.
For her breakthrough role, Martin has received numerous awards and nominations, including two NAACP Image Awards and a Young Artist Award. She has received six NAACP Image Awards nominations and two Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series nominations.
In 2016, Martin made her film debut playing a leading role in the Amazon Studios original film An American Girl Story – Melody 1963: Love Has to Win set in Detroit during the Civil Rights Movement. In 2018, Martin was cast in her first studio feature film called Little for Universal Pictures. At the age of 13, she became executive producer of film, making her the youngest person in Hollywood to ever produce a movie.
Marsai signed a first-look production deal with Universal Pictures under her production company, Genius Productions. The first film under Martin’s deal with Universal is a comedy called ‘StepMonster’, in which she will star as a teenager adjusting to life with a new stepmother. According to Variety, Martin will develop scripted projects for Universal alongside Genius Productions co-founder Joshua Martin, VP Carol Martin, and head of creative Prince Baggett.
