Black History Month is finally here!!!! Each day this month we will be honoring African Americans who uplifts our culture and exemplifies BLACK EXCELLENCE.

Issa Rae is an African American actress, writer, director, producer, and web series creator. She first was noticed for her work on the YouTube web series Awkward Black Girl. She then gained recognition for creating, co-writing, and starring in the HBO television series Insecure. With her work on Insecure, she has received two Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy and a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.

Since 2011, Rae has continued to develop her YouTube channel, which features various short films, web series, and other content created by people of color. In an interview with MyDomaine.com Rae was asked what success was going to look like for her and what her goals were going to be moving forward, Rae responded, "holding the door open." She described that being black in the industry, she was told that she didn't have an audience, that there isn't work, or that they couldn't find jobs for her. "For me, it's about providing those opportunities, and now that the door is open for me, making sure that the door stays open so that other people can walk through and tell their stories."

Issa has always been about creating opportunities for for blacks. Representation is so important. We need to see people that look like us on television. Television plays such a huge role in our society. With the HBO series Insecure, Rae says she wanted to make a show depicting the daily life for people of color while presenting relatable female characters approaching their 30s and fumbling their way through life. This Golden Globe nominates series sparked passionate conversations each week about friendship, cheating, sexuality and other topics that aren’t typically parsed through a black, female lens on a mainstream platform.

Issa thank you so much for showing black women and black people in a different light on television. Thank you for being so transparent and breaking barriers within the black community. Check out Issa Rae in her new film Little hitting the big screen in April 2019!
